A Pittsburgh family was devastated after a four-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself on Monday.
Ajani Lane reportedly shot himself while he was at his paternal grandmother’s house. The boy’s mother, Natwuana Lane, wrote on Facebook that he should have been in school and that his father’s family didn’t bother going to the hospital.
“I left him in his father & grandma care y’all failed & let my son down in every way possible y’all ain’t s**t my son was supposed [sic] to be at school instead gone then never once came to the hospital guilt will make you tilt.”
According to People Magazine, Pittsburgh police and emergency responders came to the home where little Ajani was and transported him to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He died at the hospital.
Although Pittsburgh police believe the shooting was an accident, officers are still investigating the incident.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy, and everyone at Pittsburgh Public Safety is shaken by the death of this little boy,” Cara Cruz, public information officer for Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety, told the publication. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Ajani Lane.”
The little boy’s mother is still reeling from the loss of her son. Taking to Facebook, she wrote another grief-stricken post. She promised to get justice for her son.
“No one will ever understand a single mother’s pain & hurt. I’m lost, confused, hurt, betrayed & ruined & damaged in every way possible.”
“I promise I’m going to get justice for you. Life is so unfair. This shown me so much & taught me to never trust anyone. You was so different & special. The truth is going to reveal everything that happens in the dark comes to the light.”
On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Police Department announced that it would provide gun locks to help prevent incidents like Ajani’s death from happening.
“Taking five to ten minutes to place the lock on a gun could potentially save a life,” Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said. “That’s what we’re trying to get out to the public today, that these locks are available.”
Ajani was the oldest of three children. He loved football and had just started attending school.
Natwuana has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the four-year-old’s funeral expenses. The fundraiser has raised slightly over $4,300 of its $6,000 goal.
