A woman has gone viral after sharing a TikTok video explaining how she lost a job opportunity due to her ‘inappropriate” voicemail greeting.

The TikTok user @zanayajones8 addressed the situation by making a video, which amassed more than 20 million views and 15k shares as countless TikTok users commented on the 18-second clip.

On Thursday, Jan. 27, @zanayajones8 shared a screen recording of the voicemail on the social media platform with the caption, “The time I didn’t get hired because of my voicemail.”

Though she received the voicemail in 2020, the TikToker’s post created a debate among other users on the app.

In the clip, the hiring manager reportedly cited the woman’s unprofessional voicemail greeting and decided not to proceed with her application.

“I recommend that if you apply for a job and you expect somebody to call you that you have a more appropriate response on your voicemail,” the voicemail said.

While it’s uncertain where @zanayajones8 had applied, she used the hashtag #harristeeter, implying that the job position was likely with the East Coast grocery chain.

Since the video went viral, many have asked the young woman what her voicemail contained to lose a potential job opportunity. As a result, she shared a follow-up video.

The voicemail greeting highlighted her upbeat personality, leaving many confused about why she was denied the position.

“Are you serious?” one user wrote. “He’s acting as if you’re using a bunch of foul words. It’s literally your personality.”

“Girl. It’s not even that bad!” another user said.

“This voicemail is childish, but it shouldn’t have stopped you from getting a job,” another commented. “He’s miserable. Be glad you didn’t get hired.”

Other users believed the young woman should have gotten the job based on her positive attitude in the greeting.

“I would literally hire you because of your voicemail,” one commenter wrote.

“I have worked in HR for 10-plus years. I would have laughed and proceeded with an interview. People have personalities and aren’t robots!” another added.
