Derremy Walker was sentenced to 60 years in prison after filming girls in the restroom at the high school where he worked as a janitor.
Walker was a janitor at Oviedo High School in Nov. 2019 when two girls found a recording cell phone under the sink in one of the restroom stalls. Later analysis found that he had placed the phone in the same place on two other days as well, reported NBC 2.
The Department of Justice also confirmed that Walker had also set up a secret cell phone in one of the faculty restrooms earlier that month. For each of the student recordings, he had filmed an hour of footage.
The cellphone was angled so that Walker could capture images of genitalia.
School administrators were able to identify eight of the twelve girls who had been secretly filmed.
Walker unwittingly outed himself. The janitor could be seen at the beginning of some videos setting up the phone to record actively. The authorities were able to identify Walker because of his tattoos and clothing.
He was fired from his job in 2020 and charged with eight counts of video voyeurism of a person younger than 16 and one count of voyeurism involving a person older than 19.
In the end, Walker was found guilty by a federal jury in July and sentenced to 60 years on two counts of using or trying to use children to produce sexually explicit videos. He will also serve a lifetime term of supervised release and register as a sexual offender.
“Mr. Walker did more than just produce horror; he stole the innocence and trust of these young victims. We are pleased with the sentence handed down in this case and will continue efforts to protect the children in our communities from sexual exploitation and abuse,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael McPherson.
