On September 26, Utah police confirmed that football defensive back Aaron Lowe was fatally shot at a house party in Salt Lake City.

According to ABC4, the shooting left the 21-year-old football star mortally wounded, and another unidentified woman is currently in critical condition.

Police reportedly believe that the shooting happened after guests who were not invited were kicked out.

Utes Head Coach Kyle Whittingham released the following statement, “We are devastated to hear about the passing of Aaron Lowe. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron’s family and friends, along with the other individual who was harmed in this tragic incident. Aaron was a great teammate, friend, brother, and son and was loved by anyone who crossed paths with him. He will be deeply missed.”

University of Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan also released a statement, “We are devastated by the loss of Aaron Lowe earlier this morning. Aaron was a terrific young man, a leader on our football team, and a rock of resiliency and courage. Our prayers are with Aaron’s family, friends, teammates, and all who knew and loved him.”

“We also express our deepest concern for the other individual who has been hospitalized as a result of this tragic incident; our focus will remain on them,” the statement continued.

Lowe was playing his third season for the University of Utah’s football team and, in tragic irony, was the first recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship, which was an award created in honor of the former Utes player Ty Jordan, who died in a shooting in December of 2020.

The devastating death of Jordan shook the university and his friends and family at the time. Jordan and Lowe were best friends going back to high school when they played football together. After his passing, Lowe swapped out his jersey number from No. 2 to No. 22 in honor of Jordan.
