A 16-year-old girl was killed, and a 16-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting incident outside Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta. They were harmed due to an altercation that started at the site of an unauthorized graduation party.
Bre’Asia Powell and the unidentified boy were shot at almost 3 AM on Sunday, May 28, in the driveway of the high school. Powell was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, and the unnamed boy has been reported to be in stable condition and suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police reported that the shooting occurred at a party, unauthorized in the school’s parking lot. Although no one has been arrested in relation to the shooting, family and friends of Powell sent their condolences for the young girl’s passing. According to Atlanta News First, a family friend said, “She was her mother’s first-born daughter, her mother’s princess of the castle. She was a scholar,”
“Bre’Asia did absolutely nothing. Nothing to cause this. Being at that party was not a conduit to her death. Guns were in the hands of individuals that didn’t need to have them, that wanted to treat them like Super Soakers [water guns],” She said.
“This was an unfortunate tragedy that has shaken a family and friends circle to its core,”
Another attendant of the high school, Mayor Andre Dickens, told the outlet that Powell was involved in the community.
“This young lady was full of life and was actually expected to be working for the city of Atlanta starting Tuesday in our summer youth employment program.”
He added, “My heart goes out to both families and definitely to the family of the decedent.”
Authorities said the shooters were still unidentified, and the details of the altercation leading to it were also unknown. However, officers believe that the other people involved are also high schoolers. A $10,000 reward is up for any information leading to an arrest, offered by Crime Stoppers.
