A Black woman recently died in a bathroom stall of a Maryland restaurant, and the establishment continued serving meals after she passed.
According to Fox5 DC, the now-deceased woman, identified as just “Verna,” died from a heart attack while she was in Jasper’s restroom. The All-American restaurant is located in the Prince George’s County area of Largo.
“Once we finished [eating], we all got our check, and everyone decided to go to the restroom,” Verna’s devastated husband, Craig Winn, recalled. However, Verna didn’t return, so he asked her cousin to ensure she was okay. Shockingly, she was discovered unconscious in the bathroom, and her cousin delivered the bad news.
“I just immediately jumped up and ran into the restroom and saw my wife lying on the floor, and that was the last image of my wife. Lying on the stall floor in the lady’s restroom,” Craig said.
He continued, calling Verna his “soul mate, my life partner, my best friend, my lover” of 40 years.
His wife reportedly received CPR until paramedics and the Prince George’s County Police Department arrived and pronounced her dead. Verna’s horrified family then waited for the coroner’s office to collect her body. Meanwhile, restaurant employees didn’t have the decency to close down their establishment; instead, they continued seating patrons and serving meals.
“It’s not something that we are accustomed to,” one of the restaurant’s managers, Miguel Perea, claimed. “At the moment, we thought we were doing the right thing, and we realized maybe we were wrong.”
Craig confirmed that servers reportedly consoled him as he waited on the medical examiner but wished the Maryland establishment’s management did more.
“The only thing that would’ve made me feel better is if somebody, a management person who was working that night, would’ve come over and asked what they could do to make the situation better,” he said. “I just wanted to be able to give my wife the best chance she could’ve had to be revived, so we could be home together right now.”
The owner of Jasper’s reportedly offered to assist him with the support he needs during this difficult time.
