A substitute teacher was injured during a bloody chair battle with students at a DeSoto, Texas, middle school classroom.

The incident occurred last week at DeSoto West Middle School. Video footage of the melee went viral on Facebook. The recording detailed the battle between several students and the unidentified substitute teacher as they threw desk chairs at each other.

One of the viral photos circulating shows blood streaming down the substitute teacher’s face from where the chair hit him.

According to WFAA, the students attacked the teacher first, injuring him to the point of needing medical attention. Paramedics treated the man’s injuries on-site.

Following the incident, DeSoto Independent District canceled classes for Friday, March 11.

The school district made a statement regarding the incident on March 9. And officials acknowledged that students “may have witnessed and filmed an assault that took place in a classroom on a district campus.”

“The district makes clear that it does not condone or tolerate the behavior that took place in the incident and that all parties will be held accountable to the full extent of the district’s ability to address the matter,” the statement said.

The district statement also noted that “unauthorized filming with the school setting and posting of such content online are violations of the DeSoto ISD Student Code of Conduct which could result in disciplinary action in accordance with district guidelines.”

As a result of the altercation, DeSoto ISD initiated their Spring Break early, saying, “DeSoto ISD is working to reset culture and behavior on campuses, and to refocus our system on effective instruction, learning, and student academic and social development.”

The district also outlined changes that would take place following Spring Break:

  1. “Starting Monday, March 21, 2022, every school will have a duty schedule that will place staff in all hallways and common areas of each building to monitor traffic and activity.
  2. Student Support Services will now be housed at secondary campuses to provide deeper, more responsive campus support.
  3. Students will NOT be permitted to use cell phones, earbuds, and headphones during the school day. All students have received a district-issued device to support access to tech and internet for curricular purposes.”
