Former San Francisco 49ers player Richard Sherman was arrested Wednesday morning, July 14, after allegedly attempting to break into his in-laws’ home. A 911 call made by Ashley Sherman, Richard’s wife, alleged that the football cornerback was “drunk and belligerent” and that he attempted to fight her uncle and threatened suicide. According to CNN, Richard is also under investigation for a hit and run incident that occurred around the same time.
Ashley can be heard in the 911 call, obtained by KIRO in Seattle and shared on Twitter, yelling at Richard to “please stop.”
“He’s being aggressive. He’s wrestling with my uncle. He’s threatening to kill himself. He has sent text messages saying that he is going to hang himself,” she said in the released call, adding, “He said if the police show up, then he’ll try to fight them.”

Things apparently did get physical once the former NFL player was confronted by officers outside his in-laws’ Redmond, Washington home. According to a police statement obtained by CNN, “The suspect fought with officers while being taken into custody, resulting in a Redmond K9 team being deployed to assist in gaining control.”
According to CNN, Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead stated that Richard would be investigated for a hit-and-run incident. A damaged vehicle was reportedly linked to the free agent after reports of a man hitting a barrier and getting away on foot.

Richard, 33, was taken to King County Correctional Facility and will appear in court this Thursday, July 15.
“Free agents are eligible to sign with any team,” the NFL said to CNN in an exclusive statement. “The league investigates any incident involving law enforcement, and if there is a violation of the personal conduct policy, the player would be facing discipline.”
