A man in Detroit, Michigan struck it big by winning $30,000 in the lottery, and proceeded to use most of his winnings to purchase a $20,000 gold chain, the Guardian reported. He then took a trip to a nearby Mobil gas station, where his luck, unfortunately, ran out. Identified only as Jamal, he was captured on video being chased by two unknown assailants, tackled to the ground, beaten and robbed of his high-priced jewelry in Detroit’s west side area.
The gas station’s surveillance video, obtained by Click On Detroit, shows the altercation. According to the Guardian, he wore his gold chain while inside the connected convenience store, leading to the lottery winner being targeted by “a group of three people.”
“I was just looking around, making sure that nobody is trying to get my chain,” Jamal told Click On Detroit following the incident. But the Detroit lottery winner had already been spotted.
Jamal is then seen on video running from the robbers and attempting to enter the connected store. Before he could make it, he was pulled and tackled down where one of the robbers snatched the gold chain as he lay on the ground. Click On Detroit also reported that Jamal was punched and kicked during the robbery. Witnesses could do nothing but look as Jamal was stripped of the majority of his lottery win.
According to Click On Detroit, they were able to get away by driving off. In a strange turn of events, the owner of the gas station told the news outlet that he had recognized one of the robbers as a previous thief who had stolen jewelry from a customer in the past.
No additional information has been released about the robbery suspects.
