The 10-year-old Wisconsin boy charged with fatally shooting his mother, Quiana Mann, over a VR headset has requested $100 bail.
According to WTMJ, the child, who currently goes unnamed due to being a minor, faces adult charges of first-degree reckless homicide or, in the alternative, first-degree intentional homicide. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 60 years to life in prison for allegedly shooting his mother for refusing to purchase him a virtual reality headset.
The child was reportedly charged during his first appearance in a Milwaukee court since the Nov. 21 shooting. That day, he asked for his bail to be reduced according to what was in his “piggy banks” while wearing a red t-shirt, khaki pants, and without handcuffs.
Defense Attorney Angela Cunningham requested Judge Jane Carroll to lower his bail from $50,000 to $100, saying, “We have spoken to him about his ability to post anything. He told us about piggy banks with savings that he had from savings, gifts, birthday gifts, and scavaging through cushions for cash.”
However, prosecutors disagreed and said the boy would have nowhere to go if released, saying his father is in Illinois. As such, the minor would be required to stay in Milwaukee County if he posted bail.
The judge denied the boy’s request, citing the crime’s aggressive nature regardless of his age. When a minor turns ten and is charged with homicide in Wisconsin, the case is sent to adult court.
WTMJ-TV reported that the child was very quiet and only spoke three times during the hearing, saying, “Yes. Yes. Not really,” when asked questions by the judge.
In December, News Onyx reported that the 10-year-old allegedly shot his mom in the eye after telling him she wouldn’t buy the headset. The police report stated that the mother of four was reportedly shot at close range as a bullet entered her right eye and exited the back of her head through her skull.
