15-Year-Old Arrested In Stabbing Death Of Beloved 16-Year-Old Cheerleader In Westchester County

A 15-year-old teen girl was arrested in connection to a stabbing that left one girl dead and another girl injured in Westchester County during a parade to celebrate the Mount Vernon High School Boy’s Varsity Basketball team’s state championship.

On Friday, the unidentified teen allegedly stabbed Kayla Green, 16, and another teenage girl during a physical altercation. The two victims were cheerleaders.

Mount Vernon police said when they arrived at the scene, they found a group of teenage girls fighting and soon became aware two of the girls had been stabbed. A gravely injured Green died from her injuries on the way to Jacobi Medical Center.

Mount Vernon’s Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard made a statement on Facebook Live addressing regarding, “today’s senseless and inexcusable stabbing of a 16-year-old Mt. Vernon young lady.”

She shared, “Prayers and condolences for the families, friends and community.”

She also shared an official press release announcing the tragic incident and the police investigation that ensued.

“I am devastated and completely outraged. We began our day celebrating the greatness and success of our youth and we ended it with a young life that has been taken by senseless and inexcusable violence. The mental emotional and spiritual health of our community especially of our children must be the priority and we must come together. As a community our common unity must be the safety and healthy development of our young people. Our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to the family, friends and the entire community of Mount Vernon,” she said according to the release.

Mount Vernon School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Hamilton said grief counselors will be available to students, staff, and parents and additional security will be hired to prevent violence on school property.

“Our homes, our families, we have to monitor what our children are doing on social media, ’cause I understand that there are pages where fights are being posted and being sensationalized, and where violence is being welcomed by some of our students, and that really needs to stop,” Hamilton said.

Green’s mother, Lavern Gordon, is devastated by her daughter’s death, and she took to Instagram to express her sorrow over losing her baby. Gordon also has a younger daughter.

“They took my baby away from me. They murdered my child and then bragging about it, but I leave all vengeance to God. Everyone that’s reaching out to me tagging me reposting it I really appreciate it I saw it thank you guys so much,” Gordon wrote. “I am not strong please pray for me while I try to pray for myself at this point I feel like I want to die and bury with my child, god I just want to die please take me with her she was only 16 and they took my baby away from me I want to die right now 😢😢😢😭😭I don’t even know how to say RIP to my daughter this feels so unreal God why meeeeeeeeee why meeee Lord, my daughter don’t bother ppl her mother don’t bother no one evenly Father why me I just want to die 😭😭😭😭😭.”

Green’s coach, Kirk Lan, expressed his grief over the teen’s death in a poignant Facebook with photos of the girl that he affectionately called “KG.” Lan even referenced her as his “own child.”

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I am writing this post. I am DEVASTATED and heartbroken over the passing of my Kayla Green. Kayla was a high honor roll student-athlete, community, and school leader. Kayla always carried herself with such poise and elegance. So many conversations, memorable moments, laughter, and smiles were shared weekly between us. I genuinely feel that I lost my own child. All I keep hearing her say is “Coach James” (in her voice). KG, you will forever be engraved in my heart

Green’s funeral is set for April 30, according to the GoFundMe page started by Gordon. The donation site has raised almost $25,000 of its $30,000 ask. The top donor donated $1200.
