A Georgia mother was killed in what police are saying was an unfortunate accident. Carlether Foley was shot and killed after Maxwell Williamson, her neighbor, was cleaning his gun and a bullet went through the apartment wall.

Gwinnett County police concluded that Foley, 36, was killed after Williamson, 22, accidentally fired his gun, reported

Fox 5 Atlanta.

Just before midnight at the Duluth apartment complex, Williamson was cleaning his gun when it fired, a bullet traveled through the walls, and struck Foley in the head.

Foley was found unresponsive by her son, Keyandre, in her bed. He immediately called emergency services. He is still reeling from the Sept. 25 incident.

“He’s doing the best he can. One minute he’s ok. The next minute he’s not,” George said.

Foley and her son moved from Houston, Texas to Georgia about two years ago.

“She was full of life and fun. She was always smiling. One thing about Carlether she was a go-getter,” George  said.

Williamson has been

charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He is currently in jail and being held without bond.

Foley’s sent out an important message in the midst of his family’s grief.

“If you have a gun and you stay in an apartment you have to be careful with what you’re doing because some lives can be turned upside down. Our lives have been turned upside down,” he said.

According to USA Carry, gun owners should never clean their gun while the weapon is still loaded and ammunition should be in a separate room from where they will be cleaning the gun.

Williamson told police that he had forgotten that there was a bullet in the chamber.

Regardless, his carelessness has left a teen without a mother and a family that is grieving.

“It don’t feel real. I found my mama by myself,” said Keyandre. “I just don’t get it. I don’t understand. She don’t bother nobody. My mama didn’t do nothing.”

The family is working to have her body transported for burial to southeast Texas.
