Police are investigating a shooting outside a Washington, D.C., funeral home.
The suspect on April 11 who shot and killed one man and wounded three others in a 12:30 p.m. shooting at the Stewart Funeral Home in Northeast Washington is still on the run.
“How low can you be of a human being to target people at a funeral?” D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said at a press conference.
Not much information was released during a police press conference after the shooting. It is not known if the gunman was on foot or in a vehicle.
However, Contee believes the shooting was targeted and that the person whose funeral the victims were attending was shot and killed in March.
“At this point, it appears that several people who were in the block were specifically targeted,” Contee said at a news conference outside the funeral home. “We’re unsure why that is, why these people were targeted, more or less why they were targeted at a funeral. We don’t understand that.”
In addition, police are asking the public for more information about the shooting, including the whereabouts of a green vehicle that fled the scene..
At this time, there are no suspects in the shooting.
The victims, who police say did not exchange gunfire with the shooter, were standing near the sidewalk 20 minutes after the service concluded when they were struck.
The slain man was pronounced dead at the scene and the three wounded, two men and a woman, all adults,
were taken to a nearby hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.A police officer was stationed near the funeral home at the request of the family, which Contee said was routine for homicide victims.
Police are on the scene, and several streets surrounding the funeral home have been closed as the investigation continues.
