Former UCF football player Otis Anderson Jr. was shot and killed by his father, Otis Lee Anderson Sr., on Nov. 29. Anderson’s mother, Denise Anderson, was also shot but will recover.
The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. at Anderson’s Jacksonville, Fla. home. According to authorities, Denise Anderson told police that her son’s girlfriend’s dog bit Otis Lee Anderson Sr., 52, which resulted in an argument between father and son.
After her son when back upstairs, she and her husband continued to argue. Mrs. Anderson said that after her husband flipped over a recliner, her son came back downstairs to see what was happening. The two men argued before Anderson Jr. again left the argument. Mrs. Anderson said it looked as though the two would have a physical altercation before they separated.
At some point, both men were in the kitchen and the former UCF athlete was shot twice by his father in the chest and back. Mrs. Anderson was also grazed multiple times with bullet wounds and was hospitalized at the University of Florida Health Hospital. The son was pronounced dead at the same hospital. Mrs. Anderson was treated and released.
Sheriff Mike Williams released a statement saying that the investigation is still ongoing and their prayers go out to the Anderson family.
“The men and women of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office join me in mourning with the Anderson family as they deal with last night’s incredible tragedy. While the investigation continues to be carried out, we would encourage everyone to keep the family in your prayers as they work through this very difficult time.”
Anderson Sr. was charged with one count of second-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Duval County Jail on no bond. He is scheduled for court on Dec. 22.
