A Missouri teen has reminded us all of one of the most important virtues– kindness, KSDK reported. After high school senior Joshua Nelson won a full scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University, he did not just bask in his own success but thought of a way that he could help another student who may not have been as financially fortunate as he is.
Joshua decided to take the money he saved for his own college expenses and donate it to another student in need. The $1,000 gift is the first of hopefully many from the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship that the teen established this year.
“I feel like it’s important to be involved in your community and leaving a legacy,” he said. The scholarship is aimed at helping multicultural “students who are showing leadership, community service and just have great qualities in and out of the classroom.”
Nelson is no stranger to leadership and community service. As the president of St. Charles West High School’s Multicultural Achievement Council (MAC) and a member of the National Honor Society, he appreciates the importance of a good balance between academics and altruism. His high school counselor, Yolanda Curry, was surprised by the gesture, but it is in line with who he is.
“He just has a heart for people,” she told KSDK. Nelson’s classmates were just as touched by his act of kindness. “I think he’s an inspiration,” classmate Harmony Hudson said. “I don’t even think he realizes that he’s doing that much for everyone else as well, “ she continued.
As for the future, Nelson plans to continue helping others.
The fledgling philanthropist will major in Southeast Missouri State University’s pre-optometry program. It’s no shock that a young man with such vision would be interested in helping others with their eyes.
In the coming weeks, with the help of his parents and teachers, Nelson will begin accepting and reviewing applications for the next round of gifting from the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship fund. The fund is accepting donations as well.
Joshua Nelson is certainly an example of how the world should be.
