High school basketball star Mikey Williams lost a Lace Clips partnership after being arrested in Southern California for allegedly being involved in a shooting incident in March. According to a TMZ Sports report released on May 28, Williams’ partnership with Lace Clips is officially over.
Lace Clips, a sports and technology company, partnered with the young basketball player for a name, image, and likeness deal. The company told the outlet they would no longer work with him after his public arrest.
The president of Lace Clips, Jonathan Nussbaum, said, “We are not continuing our partnership with Mikey Williams. He is not someone that will be associated with our brand going forward.” Mikey Williams is currently regarded as one of the best high school basketball players in the United States, but that reportedly doesn’t excuse his behavior.
However, Nussbaum added that Williams’ arrest wasn’t the only thing that caused the company to cut ties with him. He allegedly also wasn’t adequately following other terms of his contract made in 2022, which led to their business relationship failing prior to his arrest.
Lace Clip creates activity trackers, great for basketball, that attach to players’ shoes in order to track vital stats. Williams’ affiliation with them will end entirely at the end of May.
Williams was originally arrested on April 13, months after he’d already committed to play for the Memphis Tigers after high school, for a shooting that took place near his home in San Diego. Williams, 18, faces five felony counts of assault with a firearm. He pled not guilty to all of the charges and is set to come back to court for another exploratory hearing in June.
