Mother, Infant Son Die From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning While Sitting In Car In Michigan

A mother and her 10-month-old son were found dead inside a parking garage at a Detroit Medical Center.

Police said Kellye Canty, 25, and her son Kanan died from carbon monoxide poisoning while waiting for a relative undergoing a medical procedure, Fox 2 Detroit reported.

Canty’s husband, DeMarray, recalled the day his beloved wife and son took his mother-in-law to Harper hospital.

Though she parked in the parking structure and waited, Canty never returned to pick her mother up from her doctor’s appointment.

“I ended up calling her, she didn’t answer – so I called her sister back to see if she had talked to her,” he said. “I asked did she have her location?”

After locating the vehicle in the structure, DeMarray found Canty and their son inside the car with the doors locked.

“I just banged on the window calling her name – she wasn’t responding,” he said.

Several others helped DeMarray break the window as he tried to rescue his wife and son from the vehicle.

“I got him out of the car seat and I held him and put him to my face,” he said.

“I always put his face to my face – but his face was cold,” the grieving father said. “And I’m trying to wake him up.”

While medics and doctors did everything to save the mother and son, Canty and Kanan had already died.

Authorities believe their death was accidental and carbon monoxide was a contributing cause.

“Eventually my mom had come in and she went in with her grandson and did what she usually do … to try to wake him up, but he didn’t wake up,” he said.

DeMarray worked at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the pandemic when he met Canty. The couple had a small wedding in April 2021 and had their son shortly after.

“I just remember trying to be the best husband, fiance, partner, whatever I could be, especially during the pregnancy and stuff, so,” DeMarray said.

“It was perfect to be feeling of coming home to my family, it was kinda like magical,” he added.

Though losing loved ones is hard, DeMarray has to bear with the thought of burying his wife and son.

However, inside their Detroit home are lifelong memories they shared together.
