Nashville Waitress Gets Paid One Cent For Six Weeks Of Restaurant Work

A Nashville, Tennessee waitress went viral on social media after sharing her earning of a six-week pay period which left her with one cent as her final payout.

A woman named Liny shared a video of several tiny paychecks on TikTok, showing her salary displaying her wage of one cent.

According to the New York Post, the federal minimum wage for tipped employees across the country is $2.13 an hour. However, federal, Social Security, and Medicare taxes are taken out from earned income in Tennessee, leaving Liny with a penny.

Despite this, it’s unknown how many hours she worked during the six-week pay period, and she didn’t share how much money she gathered in tips within that time.

Her caption to the video read, “Tip your servers!!!”

Some folks disagreed with Liny, saying that they don’t believe her story or that they aren’t required to tip.
“t’s not my job to pay your bills. I got my own to pay.” one user wrote, which gathered a whopping 10,200 likes.

Another said, “Not the full story here. Servers must get paid the state’s minimum wage. So you made more in tips. Bye.”

“Blame the businesses you’re working for, not the consumers,” another viewer agreed. “In other countries, they don’t need to tip because they pay a living wage.”

“I’ve easily made $4400 a month being a server. Don’t let those empty checks fool you if you’re serving and making so much more than you get as an hourly rate,” one person wrote.

Other people defended Liny, commenting that servers are underpaid and people who do not tip shouldn’t go to a restaurant.

“You can’t tip– go to McDonald’s or cook at home,” one user stated.

“Y’all did not pass the vibe check. When someone is taking your order and bringing your food, they are providing a service,” a second person added.

A third user wrote,” People don’t understand that servers have to tip a certain % of sales to kitchen and bar. If you don’t tip, servers are PAYING for you to eat.”
