Nelly Cheboi proved recycled technology could be used for the better by constructing computer labs in rural classrooms in Africa through her organization TechLit Africa and recycled computers. Through her philanthropy, she’s not only improving education for young Kenyans, but she’s also opening them up to a new world of possibilities.

Because of Cheboi’s philanthropic actions, she was honored

as the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year. The 16th CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute aired on Dec. 11 in New York City and was hosted by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and Live! With Kelly and Ryan talk show host Kelly Ripa.

After Cooper and Ripa announced she was the esteemed award recipient, Cheboi screamed for joy and stepped out of the line that the Top 10 Heroes formed and motioned for her mother to join her on stage.

As a genuinely emotional moment for Cheboi and her mother, the two began to sing a song she used to sing to her when she was younger. She explained how her mother believed in education despite many telling her that her four daughters didn’t need to work or be educated; they could get married.

She said that her mom would work on the side of the road for four decades. It was her mother’s hard work that inspired her.

“I did not have much growing up, but I have had a lot of selfless people in my life,” Cheboi said in her speech. “My mom, the most selfless person in the world.”

Those who make the Top 10 Hero list are awarded $10,000, but since Cheboi won Hero of the Year, she will receive an additional $100,000 grant that will allow her to continue changing lives.

In addition to winning Hero of the Year, Cheboi was named an Elevate Prize winner, which awards her $300,000 and $200,000 worth of supportive services.
