San Jose State Football Player Dies After Being Hit By School Bus While On Scooter

San Jose State (SJSU) football player Camdan McWright recently died after being hit

by a school bus while on a scooter.

According to KTVU, McWright reportedly rode an electric scooter in the area of S 10th and Reed streets when he was fatally hit by a bus. Officials said the college freshman was on his way to work out when the tragic incident occurred on Oct. 21 and that he rented the scooter. The San Jose Police Department additionally confirmed that there were 14 students, ranging from 14 to 17 years old, and its driver aboard the bus. However, none of them were hurt, the San Jose Unified School District said.

“We lost an amazing young man this morning. Camdan had a bright future ahead of him, and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that,” San Jose State’s football coach Brent Brennan said in a statement about McWright’s death. “We are still trying to deal with the news of this tragedy and appreciate everyone’s support during these difficult times.”

Athletic Director Jeff Konya said McWright was a well-regarded member of The Spartans, saying he was “just a very bright, articulate, energetic individual. He was a freshman, was beloved by the team, had a great personality.”

SJSU President Steve Perez added that the college football player’s loss is “deeply, deeply felt” on the university’s campus.

“It is deeply, deeply, deeply felt on our campus. All of our thoughts, our prayers, our sympathy with our student parents, with friends, teammates – everybody in the Spartan family,” Perez said.

The Spartans were reportedly scheduled to play a game against New Mexico State in New Mexico on Oct. 22, but the game has since been postponed. The team honored McWright with a candlelight vigil at the scene of the accident that claimed his life.
