Shirley Azambuya Turns Herself In to Atlanta Police After Stealing $1 Million in Jewelry from Date

Jewel thief Shirley Azambuya was arrested after allegedly finessing her date out of $1 million in jewelry after a night out in Atlanta.

The alleged incident occurred in June after Azambuya, and her unidentified victim went on a date, reported Fox 5 Atlanta.

The woman and the mark hung out in Buckhead, an affluent neighborhood in Atlanta, before they went back to the man’s hotel room. Surveillance cameras show several chains around the man’s neck as Azambuya stood nearby.

When the pair got to the room, the victim took off his jewelry and placed it in a safe provided by the hotel.

As he got settled, Azambuya went to the bathroom to turn on the shower. When he woke up, she was gone, and so were his jewels. Atlanta Police says the man was intimate with her and believes he might have been drugged because “he has never slept that hard,” per 11 Alive.

“He took his jewelry off, placed it in the hotel room’s safe, then he went to sleep. By the time he woke up, he advised the safe was empty and the woman that he met had left the location,” Atlanta Police Sgt. Jarius Daugherty said.

It is unclear how Azambuya was able to break into the locked safe.

After her face was broadcast across the media, Azambuya turned herself in. The victim also chose her out of a lineup of pictures. The items she stole were listed during a court appearance on Friday.

“The alleged theft on that one, your honor, was assorted jewelry, gold and diamond chains, bracelets and pendants, and also a watch valued at over a million dollars,” an Atlanta Police rep stated.

Investigators believe she scammed two other men a couple of nights before the date that got her caught up.

A judge set Azambuya’s bond at $160,000.
