The First Lady of Haiti Martine Moïse is speaking out after her husband, President Jovenel Moïse, 53, was assassinated, according to 7 News Miami. As Newsonyx reported, the Haitian president was assassinated in his home on July 7.
A highly-trained group of gunmen dressed as DEA agents broke into the home and shot the president to death. The first lady was also wounded during the attack and taken to a Miami hospital for treatment.
Moïse spoke on a recording that was aired on local radio stations in Miami. The widow said that she was grateful to be alive but that her husband was pelted with bullets. She claimed that her husband was assassinated because of his ideology.
“You know who the president was fighting against,” she said. “They sent mercenaries to kill the president at his home with members of his family because of roads, water, electricity and referendum as well as elections at the end of the year so that there is no transition in the country.
“I’m alive, thanks to God,” she continued. “But I love my husband Jovenel. We fought together for more than 25 years. During all these years, love radiated within the home. But suddenly, the mercenaries came and pelted my husband with bullets.
You have to be a notorious criminal without guts to assassinate a president like Jovenel Moïse with impunity without giving him the chance to speak. You knew who the president was fighting against. These people hired mercenaries to kill the president and his family because of the projects of roads, electricity, drinking water supply, organization of the referendum and elections …
The mercenaries who assassinated the president are currently behind bars,” she added, “but other mercenaries currently want to kill his dream, his vision, his ideology.
Moïse was assassinated after opposition leaders demanded he resigned from the position he was supposed to relinquish in February. His supporters claimed that Moïse’s term began when he took office in 2017 and had one more year left on his term. Moïse refused to step down for that reason.
The first lady ended her message with strength and resilience.
“I am crying, it is true, but we cannot let the country lose its way. We cannot let his blood … have been spilled in vain.”
