Three Black friends, Kandace Florence (28), Jordan Marshall (28) and Courtez Hall (33), vacationing in Mexico City, were found dead in an Airbnb.
According to The New York Post, Florence, Marshall and Hall had traveled to Mexico in October to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Florence’s boyfriend, who didn’t join the trio’s trip, said he was on the phone with her when she started feeling sick on Oct. 30. That evening, she told him that something didn’t seem right, but the call dropped, so he tried calling back to no avail. Growing increasingly worried, he reached out to the Airbnb host for a wellness check.
When security arrived at the location Florence, Marshall and Hall were found dead.
“We can confirm the death of three U.S. citizens in Mexico. We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” the State Department representative said in a statement to People. “Out of respect for the privacy of the families, we have nothing further to add at this time.”
The victim’s families said they’ve been in touch with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and even traveled to Mexico City to demand an explanation for what occurred. ABC News alleged that they tragically died from carbon monoxide poisoning, but it hasn’t been confirmed. Marshall’s loved ones also said they’ve been unable to retrieve his personal items since, including his laptop and wallet.
Florence and Marshall reportedly attended high school together in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Hall, originally from New Orleans, was friends with Marshall, who lived in New Orleans as well.
Florence would’ve turned 29 on Nov. 10, and her mother, Freida, described her as a “dreamer” who desired to make a difference in the world.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico said its officials were “closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death.”
