Unvaccinated NBA players for New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors will not play their home games since the league is deferring to local COVID-19 policies.
A memo sent to players stated the NBA would follow local COVID-19 protocols, per CNBC. As a result, players on New York City and San Francisco teams must be vaccinated to participate in their home games. NYC requires people have at least one vaccine before they’re allowed to enter a covered facility, while San Fran requires full inoculation.
Players in New York must be fully vaccinated by September 13, while San Francisco ballers have until October 13.
“We will continue to follow all government and league mandates,” the Knicks said in a statement. The Warriors and Nets have not spoken about the policy.
The only exemptions are for approved medical and religious excuses. Players who refuse to be vaccinated without an approved exemption may be fined or suspended. The policy doesn’t affect players on visiting teams.
The NBA has not adopted any vaccination requirements for players, but referees and personnel who come within 15 feet of players must be vaccinated.
Additionally, those who have been inoculated will be given perks, according to The Athletic. Fully vaccinated persons will not be subjected to regular testing unless they show symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in close contact with an infected person. Vaccinated individuals who are exposed to someone with the virus will not be required to quarantine. If an entire team is vaccinated, they aren’t restricted from off-court activities like chillin’ in a club or lounge.
In contrast, unvaccinated folks must undergo daily testing and be required to quarantine if exposed to COVID-19. They will be required to wear masks in team facilities and during travel.
The NBA season starts on October 19.
