Ahmaud Arbery’s Killer Afraid To Die In Georgia Prison

One of the men who fatally shot Ahmaud Arbery says he’s afraid of being killed at the hands of fellow inmates in Georgia prison.

As Sis2Sis previously reported, the three men who were convicted in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery were found guilty of federal hate crimes on February 22.

All three were sentenced to life in prison, but The McMichaels have no possibility of parole.

On Thursday, Travis’ attorney Amy Lee Copeland filed a memo requesting Travis stay in federal government custody. Travis is currently being held at the Glynn County Detention Center.

According to CNN, the memo read, “His concern is that he will promptly be killed upon delivery to the state prison system for service of that sentence: He has received numerous threats of death that are credible in light of all circumstances, and the government has a pending investigation into the Georgia DOC’s ability to keep inmates safe in a system where murder rates have tripled.”

The memo also stated, “The threats have included statements that his image has been circulated through the state prison system on contraband cell phones, that people are ‘waiting for him,’ that he should not go into the yard, and that correctional officers have promised a willingness (whether for pay or for free) to keep certain doors unlocked and backs turned to allow inmates to harm him.”

Travis’ 66-year-old father, Greg, has also asked the judge to put him in federal prison for safety and health concerns.

Arbery was gruesomely shot and killed at the hands of the three on February 23, 2020. His killing caused a public outcry for justice and citizens to be aware of the racism that still exists, allowing Black people to be recklessly slaughtered.

Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, did not want the plea to be accepted and made her own plea to the judge.

She told the judge, “Granting these men their preferred conditions of confinement would defeat me. It gives them one last chance to spit in my face after murdering my son.”

Sentence hearings for the three murderers will start on Monday.
