A suspect in the triple murder of a family in Houston, Texas, has been arrested.
Xavier Davis, 28, was charged with three counts of capital murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Wednesday, reported KHOU.
Initially, police picked up the suspect on an unrelated matter before the Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted the capital murder charge, according to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.
Police said a man allegedly came to the door of the apartment where the family resided. The father, 35-year-old Gregory Carhee, was fatally shot, and a 1-year-old baby was thrown by the hair. Once inside, the suspect opened fire on other family members, including the mother, a 6-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl.
Donyavia Lagway was 29, and her deceased daughter was named Harmony. Harmony’s 10-year-old sister was shot in the arm and pretended to be dead to avoid being shot again. When she could, she called her grandmother for help and cradled her 1-year-old brother.
“She’s like, ‘Granny, my mom got shot,'” Manda Lagway told KTRK. “My dad got shot,’ and I’m like, ‘What happened?'”
The surviving daughter told police that the suspect made the family sit on the couch before shooting them in the head. There was also an 8-year-old brother that was sleeping away from home that night who was unharmed.
There were no signs of forced entry giving investigators the impression that the victims of the murder may have known the suspect.
The children’s grandmother wants the world to know that her granddaughter is a hero despite it all.
“I just want everybody to know my baby. She’s a hero. My baby is a hero,” said Lagway.
Police are still looking for a second suspect, but in the meantime, only Xavier Davis has been arrested. He is being held on a $1 million bond and has not yet entered a plea nor issued a statement.
