John F. Kennedy High School honored Emmanuel “Manny,” Antwi, a talented football player who passed away during a football game last Friday, according to People Magazine.

The publication reported that Antwi was looking forward to playing in the first game of the football season amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and it was an exciting time for the athlete. Anti was an 18-year-old high school senior who was praised by many, including his coaches.

“A truly amazing young man. I still can’t find the words to describe what he meant to me. Please help his mother provide for her family. She works so hard to provide for all 3 of her children. Losing Manny has put a huge hole in all of our hearts,” said Antwi’s coach, Brian Lewis Jr.

The young man was rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the sidelines and a failed CPR procedure.  After his collapse, the football game was canceled for the remainder of the night. He was pronounced dead at the hospital according to the Sacramento Bee.  The reason for his Antwi’s death remains unknown.

Antwi’s loss took a toll on everyone. His other coach, Alex Gomes-Coelho, delivered a heartfelt message about the athlete and how the game of football could be a stepping stone to creating a family amongst teammates and coaches.

“There is nothing that can prepare you for a moment like that. The pain is indescribable. When you play or coach team sports you really become a family. My heart hurts from Cougar Nation and Manny’s family at home,” said Gomes-Coelho.

After Antwi’s death, the streaming link, Zoom became accessible for students who wanted to share their thoughts about him, coming to terms with grief and asking everyone to respect the family’s privacy at this time. A GoFund Me page was launched, totaling up to $37,000 to pay Antwi’s funeral expenses and other personal bills for his family.

“We do not have further public information or comment we can provide at this time. Our thoughts are with the athlete, his family, and our Sac City Unified Community,” said SCUSD.
