Georgia Freshman Defensive Lineman Jamaal Jarrett Mocked Asian American Speaker Because He Was Impatient

University of Georgia freshman defensive lineman Jamaal Jarrett, who was streaming the 2023 NFL Draft, yelled, “Come on, Asian. Ching chong,” to an Asian-American announcer as he anticipated his own teammate being selected in the first round by the Atlanta Falcons.

On April 27, hoping for his fellow Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle Jalen Carter to be drafted, Jarrett, who was streaming the event on his Instagram from his remote location at a UGA watch party, became frustrated with the Asian speaker for not calling Carter’s name to his liking.

Impatient and perhaps overly excited about the thought of Carter being called on for the No. 8 , Jarrett blurted out “Ching chong” to express his disapproval of the Asian person.

The Atlanta Falcons used their No. 8 pick to select Bijan Robinson, a running back from the University of Texas at Austin. The Philadelphia Eagles selected Carter with the 9th pick.

Jarrett, a four-star recruit who has committed to play for the Bulldogs next year, was ranked as the No. 172 prospect nationally and the 23rd ranked defensive lineman prospect in the Class of 2023.

Initially, the IG stream went unnoticed until an Asian American on TikTok who goes by the name etchaskej, or Ed, helped bring some attention to the troubling video.

In his statement, Ed believes the university had a hand in preventing Jarrett’s video from becoming a news story because the athletic director and his teammates kept quiet about his racist outburst.

“When I say UGA went on a campaign, I’m referring to whatever they do to sweep it under the rug from the public/media. University of GA and Jamaal Jarrett need to be held accountable,” Ed wrote in the description of the video.

Jarrett and UGA have been silent since shortly after the video was published by a wave of media outlets, including Deadspin and The New York Post.
